(17) Apo Hiking Society has a song “American Junk.” They basically castigated the Americans. Yet they applied for visas to hold a concert in Las Vegas ? Goodness, how thick could you get !

It’s unfortunate that many of the 18 points above have at least an element of truth at their cores. The non Filipino who wrote that is quite cynical, but it’s hard to refute his main points.

To the one who made the list: If you’re not a filipino, then kudos to you. You know more about the nation that many filipinos. If you’re a filipino, I’m not surprised if you get to bad mouth your own country. Self-deprecation and lack of pride in our nation are some of our vices.

Quite frankly I agree with this guy. I’ve been living here for 6 months now and I’m a Filipino from the States. A lot of these things are sadly true friend. Pride in this nation is something closer to a false sense of nationalism. What the Philippines needs right now is humility. We need to realize that there are a lot of things wrong with the country and that something needs to be done. Before we can be proud of our nation, we need to make it into something we can be proud of. As of right now we have too many weaknesses like our leaders for example, poor education leads us to make weak choices and education is one MAJOR thing we fail to focus on. The country’s focus doesn’t seem to be centralized around itself but rather than to the other countries around us. Right now I say I am filipino, but I am NOT proud to say it.
I totally agree with you. Most of the Filipinos I know are like that. The author didn’t say all Filipinos are that bad. All nationalities have their own weaknesses and we all have to accept them. If we don’t, then we’d probably be unable to find solutions to change for the better. I think that the best thing to do is to keep all those observations in mind and try not to do them again.

I hate that i am half filipino. I visited the country of my mothers origin and was seriously ill in the 10 days “vacation” time i had. Going to the hospital there was a huge joke. I was afraid of catching something and being even worse before i left for the states. Ugh. My own mother tried to screw my sister and i over when we sold our land there. She also forgot to mention to us as her biological children that she re-married and has an adoptive daughter. Everyone that i have ever known to be filipino is perfectly described in this blog. My own American father actually anulled the marriage with my mother and assumed full custody of my sister and myself when we were very young. I have to say that that was the best thing my late father did for my whole existence. I am ever so proud to be an American.

Well im filipino and none of those in category fits me. So yeah..
I was born in the Philippines and moved to the US when I was a teenager, and I can’t deny these facts mentioned above. I haven’t been home for a while but I think some if not all of these are still ongoing, and it’s sad. I grew up in Bacolod so I’m not sure about the Tagalogs and their hate for Visayans, I’m gonna have to research about that. It makes me a sad panda. Anyway, they could’ve added Wowowee on the list. I visited my mom and was shocked to see this show in one of her Filipino Channel. The “Kembot Girls” literally made my jaw drop. I can’t believe they tolerate such shows on DAYTIME, that clearly degrades women. But my heart still goes out to my fellow Filipinos and the never-dying hope that our country and the people there will step-up and improve their own worsening situation. It’s gotta start there first before someone from the outside should even bother and interfere.

The reasons that you put on why the Philippines “sucks” I understand. Yet, in every place around the world…people will have their reasons. Now although I have my reasons for not liking the Philippines(I have asthma and I can barely breathe in the Philippines’ airport) I am also proud of the attitude of the people from the Philippines and the hard work that the parents had to endure in the process of immigration. I have a semi-lavish life compared to the Philippines, but I wouldn’t be where I am today without my parents. Some of the reasons you have listed are due to I suppose money problems. Which happens all around the world, but that is not the point. Living in a tough world and being poor has taught my parents to be generous and understanding. Living in poor standards, I believe, is better and gives a standard to all the younger generations. The Philippines may not be perfect nor great compared to most countries, but it definitely does not “suck” in my opinion and have great things to offer to others even though it may not be materialistic.

Wow, people here who claim that Filipinos shouldn’t be “generalized” just don’t have a clue what generalization means, which proves again that you lot are idiots. Generalization is something that affects or characterizes the majority of those involved. So if we say that Filipinos are brown and 8 out of 10 of them are you retard, it doesn’t mean that all Filipinos are brown but the damn majority of them ARE. Here we can see a “generalization” being true.
I don’t even know why this word connotes something negative in the Philippines (the ironic thing is it becomes something automatically someone would say w/o even understanding the word) but maybe it has something to do with the fact that these are indeed true so many of you go with this self-defense.
So if we say that a Filipino citizen’s vote can be bought, it doesn’t mean all act that way but many of you do. You can’t deny facts like vote buying for a measly can of sardines or a measly peso amount because this happens indeed on the national scale. Sad fact about is that many do indeed sell their votes come election time.
Not all of you may be guilty of these things but there sure is a hell lot of you doing it without thinking about your future. Democracy isn’t for a race filled with idiots and in the Philippines, we can see why.

As a foreigner married to a Filipina living in the Phils for 5 years, these comments no doubt ring true. But I’m also crritical of my home country when I see wrong. Pointing out the bad is the only way to improve, got to clearly identify the probs to fix them, denial won’t fix anything. This applies to any country.
But on balance, there are so many good things about the Phils such as the always happy and optimistic people. If you embrace the faults and postives of the country you can have much fun here. A smile and a “good afternoon” in local dialect goes a long way.
Most of these 18 issues, yea are problems, but not so bad for a developing country.
Fix these 3 serious problems and the rest will take care of themselves:
1. Corruption- yep, everyone knows it.
2. Justice system- Can’t have cops selling you your freedom, courts taking 20 years to settle a case, and people killing for a few thousand pesos, cause they know they can hide.
3. Infrastrucure- without roads, power, and water no one’s going to invest seriously.

I was starting to like your blog until I read this. I could think of more than 18/better reasons why our countrymen/country suck. Your reasons are too broad.
1.) Corrupted Gov.

2.) No sense of initiative
We rarely do things for the better. We usually have this thinking that as long as we can feed our family everything is okay. That’s good because we have close family ties but is that it? Do we just stop there? I remember I was in California, almost all of the doctors were Indians, people prefered them to be their doctor because Indians are known for their smarts. And what do we do in America? Be maids, nurses, caregivers, janitors; I’m not “belitteling” those jobs, I’m saying that we’ve been those people too long, my lola was a caregiver and now most of our ofw women are still known to be caregivers, when are we going to develop a higher ranking or education? India and Philippines used to be in the same situation, years later we’re still in the same pot hole while they’re up there almost with Japan and China.
3.) Too much pride
Pride is bad people. For the religious, it’s in the Bible! For those who aren’t so religious, if you think about it, yelling “PINOY PRIDE!” is pretty annoying and sensless, you’ll look like a dork, kapal mukha, specially if youre in another country. Just imagine Americans here in the Philippines, all wearing a map of America on their shirts, American flag here and there and in every conversation “Oh I’m American blablabla”. Not just America, just imagine any country who would do that in our own counrty. Sounds rude amirite?
4.) Lack of manners
Other than #3 as an example, I rarely hear Filipino’s say please, thank you, excuse me, sorry unless they are told to. Filipinos brag about knowing english so well but when it comes to this “oh, in my native village/country I we don’t have po and opo, I wasn’t raised like that”, but you just said you knew english very goods.
5.) Lack of Discipline
Could be related to #4. Ride any public transportation and you’ll know what I mean. Yes, even LRT/MRT, the passengers don’t know how to take turns (#4!). Drivers rarely make way for others, even pedestrians. Don’t get me started with traffic rules.
6.) Too Senstive
Related to too much pride, Filipinos would violently react to anything that would go against their Pinoy pride, an example would be this blog, anti-pinoy and the Carolla guy I forgot his name. Problem here is that most people don’t know the difference between comedy and an insult. Feeling palaging inaapi. We can’t live in a world full of praises people. Laughing at our negative sides can be a good thing, as long as we don’t live it that way.
7.) Racist
Yes we are. Very much.

We blame others (gov.) but we never try to change our selves which makes us no different form them.

They mindlessly follow rules and procedures. They often take shit and allow themselves to be abused by their bosses, government, and their God. If there is one thing you can be sure of in this country, is that if you trust in the system and in the people, you will be fucked in the ass at every single corner. Nothing works in this country. Fast food is slow as hell. Customer service will stress you out. And the schools will make you a goddamn idiot. I really hate this place and all the stupid people I have to deal with. Sure we cant generalize and say EVERYONE is dumb, i mean i am Filipino after all. But damn! Filipinos ARE FUCKIN DUMB! You guys see this Lola Lourdes thing? An 85 yr old woman is locked in a cage by her daughter and son in law. Television crew shows up with the DSWD to rescue her… HUGE PUBLIC OUTCRY… and guess what? No one is arrested. DSWD official even argues on camera THAT THE FACT THAT THESE ANIMALS ARE EXPOSED ON TV FOR THEIR CRIMES IS PUNISHMENT ENOUGH!!!!! What a fucking moron. the only duty of this branch of government is to protect women, children, and the elderly. I’m from South Korea and I realized something that many Filipinos have, it is so much pride for their country. Now don’t get me wrong but I know that Philippines is a Catholic country and having a lot of Christians too, but I find it weird that most of the Filipinos that I know are telling me to “be proud of the Philippines and it’s people” everywhere I go and I heard that ‘Pride’ is one of the deadliest sins… I’m not against Filipinos but I really think they should know themselves a little better… Sorry if I have bad grammar but it’s because it’s only been a year since my parents sent me to the Philippines to study English.

I hate the fact that many of the Filipinos are so racist, especially here in Dubai where I live. Whenever I visit a shopping mall, I see that they jump on top of each other to please someone with white skin, or someone looking rich, whereas they don’t even say ‘hi’ or smile at anyone with dark skin. At the counter they don’t even tend to make eye contact with non-whites. It’s like they mean to say ‘we are too good for this job’. Whats with this behavior??? I have seen this happen time and again, so much that I expect it to happen every time I visit a public place and see Filipinos around.
They also tend to never mix with other groups, unless it is a girl hooked with another guy. You will see a lot of ‘Apartment sharing’ ads with ‘Only Filipinos’ mentioned on them.
Some, and I have seen very few, seem like nice and polite to everyone. I guess these might be the ‘new arrivals’ who are yet to learn the hating ways of their compatriots.

I’m a Filipino and I’ve been living here in the Philippines my whole life (21 yrs.).
I’ve experienced a lot of things in this country, mostly not good or nice things. Before, I used to think that people in power, people with good looks and intelligence, mild-mannered and kind people are the good guys in the country, you know, but it’s really depressing that even such people are corrupted and demented to their core and are even the source of all the sickening phenomena in the country. It’s an eclipse to see true beautiful, true good people in this country. You’d have to be crazy, to be a martyr, or to be Jesus to want to live here because no matter how good, how remarkable a person you are, you’re still the same kind of being as the ones living here. They will really drag your self-esteem, your credibility, your spirit down rock bottom. It’s a punishment to live here. The only thing you’ll enjoy here is your imagination of not being here. This is coming from a person who’s relatively comfortable in life, who achieved awards from different universities and schools. It’s just so sad to realize that all your achievements in life and hardwork in this country will be in vain and will, no matter what, be looked down by upon by people from a great race. Peace to everyone and may God bless this truly poor country.

I realize the Philippines isn’t perfect. I realize it has a ton of problems actually. But take it from a soon-to-be-former American, the United States is easily the most uncivilized, barbaric, uneducated dung heap in the industrialized world. Anybody who you meet who naively says they want to move to America please tell them a few things first. Like the U.S. is a fascist police state where the government can have any citizen assassinated with no trial and no opportunity to legally defend themselves. Its government can tap your phone without a warrant, read your mail before it gets to you, intercept your e-mail, demand your medical records, investigate your library checkouts (doesn’t apply to most Americans as they are the most unread and intellectually lazy wretches the world has ever seen) and place a tracking device on anyone’s car without a warrant. The government can even kidnap any American citizen in the middle of the night after designating them an “enemy combatant” based on hearsay or a whim, drug them up, torture them and keep them in a dog kennel in 110-degree heat in Guantanamo Bay naval base in Cuba.

As an educated Filipina currently working in a multinational corporation, the only thing that deeply disturbs me about the Philippines is the seething injustice that employees who work for privately owned Chinese companies go through! I’m sorry if it sounds like a racist and generalized statement, but it is a well known fact that the typically Chinese family-owned business model cares little about the well-being of its employees and views them as dispensable commodities – because they know that everyone in this country needs a job! Treat your employees well and with a little HUMANITY, for the love of God! To the Sy family: ang YAMAN YAMAN ninyo but you work your employees like dogs and expect them to be grateful!

After meeting with my father whom I haven’t seen for 26 years at a meeting point in makati, he has the NERVE to ask me for money. He wanted that money so he can help pay off his car? his house? his child support with some other young filipino broad? his debt? NOT ONLY did he ask me for money my half brothers and sisters did as well. The country has an overabundant amount of corruption , crime, terrorism, and poverty. Give me a break, I don’t hate the country, but I most certainly can’t bring up enough facts to wanna have a great amount of pride in the country. The country in general, the Philippines is a great place to live but when we have to face NEGLIGENT workers, especially the government, it makes Filipinos want to become OFW and the foreigners just to go back home because the constitution, despite how good it is, it is never properly played out through those in government…i honestly have never seen such laziness as I have seen here in the Philippines government offices where they use the word “entertain” instead of “assist” in their vocabulary.
Another thing I greatly dislike, here in the Philippines, are the “official receipts” we receive in the government related offices which operates more like a business than an act of service to the people as the Constitution promises…I have been over charged on many many occasions and all they would say is “you have a receipt” but when i showed a receipt from another government office, who was just like theirs, being charged for the same thing the prices were less and when the officers asked for me to show the receipts he confessed in the Ombudsman that his worker overcharged me and said “it wont ever happen again” and he refused to return to money that was overcharged.
They behave like kings, or rulers, instead of knowing that when they first stepped foot into a government office they knew very well it was an act of service they were to give to the people but instead they want to be served.
The government offices are so so negligent and ignores our constitutional rights.
It is high time for the Filipinos to become less passive and more whistle blowers so our government workers will realize that to work in such as place is an act of service to the people and not to be their bosses or some business making money.

Lala land is what most filipinos like to hear all the time even if the outside world already sees us badly. Take for example- what the is it with our women working overseas as maids in Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, Singapore…while the men stay at home being immobile as hell? Why do I hear many filipinos insulting others who tell the truth as it is? Who don’t buy the nonsensical, shallow society and who don’t smile for fakeness’ sakes? Why can’t everyone just accept that we are very flawed and they need to be worked on? Kudos to the author for being the no-nonsense and straightforward person that I wish all filipinos emulate.

I didn’t read all the comments on here because there are so many, but I’d like to say some things. Full disclosure, I’m American. I’ve been living in the Philippines for about 4 years and own a small business here. Filipinos tend to get VERY upset when people say bad things about their country and culture, regardless of if the negative comments have any truth to them or not. It also doesn’t seem to matter if the comments come from a fellow Filipino or a foreigner, most Filipinos get angry and seem to be in denial about the problems in their country.
An obvious reason this happens is because no one likes to be insulted. But another reason I think it happens frequently is, every time I see something negative like this on the Internet, the way it’s written seems to imply that these negative characteristics apply to ALL Filipinos.
Filipinos need to realize that very few people would believe that any negative aspect of Filipino society applies to everyone in the country. They just don’t SAY that it doesn’t apply to everyone. They make generalizations. The way Filipinos should think of these kinds of negative comments is, “Why is this person saying this?” Mostly, I see Filipinos saying it’s because the person is hateful, or racist. (By the way, Filipino is NOT a race. It’s a nationality. Your RACE is Asian. So unless the insults are being flung at Japan and China too, you can’t call the person a racist….)
But the real reason people say these bad things is this: The bad thing they are complaining about EXISTS.
Now, do bad behaviors and social problems exist in every country? YES. OF COURSE. In fact, nearly ANY problem you can point out about the Philippines ALSO EXISTS IN THE USA. The difference is in how COMMON the problem or bad behavior is. Rude behavior that I may have either NEVER experienced in the US or only experienced 1 or 2 times in decades living there has happened to me repeatedly here.
Some of the problems happen because of poverty. WORLDWIDE, poorer countries have higher murder, rape, and other violent crime rates than richer countries. There are lots of reasons for this. But it is NOT an insult to Filipinos to point this out. Nor is it an insult to poor people. It’s not that Filpinos are “bad” or that poor people are “bad”. It’s simply that if you have no money, you do desperate things.
People with more money only act better because they have more to lose by committing crimes. They have more to protect so they don’t want to risk it by doing something bad. A good person can do bad things if they are hungry, or homeless, or treated like shit by people around them.
Filipinos get mad at Americans for insulting their country, but you know what? We insult OUR OWN country a lot too. To the American way of thinking, pointing out the flaws of our country is the only way to DO something about them. You can’t fix something if you aren’t willing to face it!
It’s true that some foreigners are just assholes and insulting the Philippines to be rude. But most who live here or have lived here do so out of frustration and a desire to see things CHANGE. It’s not about making Filipinos like US, just about getting things to be BETTER. Look at Japan. Japan is a very different culture than the USA. But Japan and the Japanese people have the respect of the world. Even though their different than Americans, we recognize that there are things about their culture and the way they do things that are better than in the US. Filipino culture can be unique but still be great. Right now, it is unique, but has so many problems that it boggles the mind.
I’ll just close by saying this to any Filipino reading this: From now on, when you see someone writing bad things about the Philippines or Filipinos, try not to be mad or insulted about it. Ask yourself if there is ANY truth to what the person is saying and realize that even if what the person is saying isn’t true about YOU, it’s likely true about some people in your country.
The Philippines as so much potential and Filipinos do too. That’s the thing that frustrates me more than anything….that this could be an incredible place to live but it isn’t. Filipinos have some great traits (although probably not the ones that everyone repeats all the time). But truly the BIGGEST problems here are apathy and an inability to face the truth.

definitely agree with everything you mentioned… since you mentioned about poverty, in many ways, somehow poverty breeds envy and denial that the simplest form of observation turns out to be “crab mentality” when it can looked at in a different perspective —- somehow in general, filipinos tend to be less optimistic when thrown with a few words.

Some Of us Filipinos volunteers for the clean and green projects, Like planting trees, Cleaning the thrashes on the beach and so on. We have ENVIRONMENTALIST here, like myself. But the problem is EDUCATION, our government doesn’t care about this, but when the former president FERDINAND MARCOS was still alive, things wasn’t the same. HE WAS A TRUE VISIONARY. And I do believe that what the PHILIPPINES needs is a president like him, and I would like for his son to run for president in the next election coz in some ways they both have the same view.

I’m a Filipino who has lived in the US. All 18 mentioned are damn right. I am so disgusted by many Filipinos also. What I love about the American people is they are more straightforward, honest, polite in a real sense (not the filipinos’ superficial politeness of using ate, kuya, po and opo but cuts you off in a line) and they most of the time try hard to provide a good service.
Here’s why I don’t like the Filipinos:
1. So ungrateful. You give them a thousand pesos and talks behind your back that it isn’t much.
2. Lazy and are self-entitled. They expect to be served by someone in the family who is either an OFW or is doing better in life.
3. Housewives gossip a lot. Instead of helping their husbands earn some income during free time, a lot of filipino women gossip and talk bad about their neighbors.
4. Envious of their neighbors success and talk bad.
5. They always think of how to take advantage of you—-corruption is from regular people to higher officials.
6. Shallow and dumb. Instead of watching and promoting shows to make the people intelligent, they patronize highly dramatic soap operas or cheap and corny variety shows.
6. They STARE.
7. They want a free ride on the success of other people.

Filipinos have a far better taste and more discriminatory in food than Americans. Being a biodiversed tropical agricultural country, there’s plenty of regional cuisine that are undiscovered and not commercialized. Filipino farmers are eating freshly catched food and their ingredients are local. Canned foods, processed food for mass production, and Jollibee is a filipino counterpart influenced by McDonalds and by Western ways of food consumption. So don’t put down on Filipno gastronomy. Americans should just look at themselves in the mirror and see the epidemic of obesity, heart diseas and cancers. Sadly, Filipinos are caught up on anything that’s Western including the not so good.
