Sadly, masses of ignorant Filipinos took the bait of washed up comedian Adam Carolla. A simple glance at his Facebook page reveals that there are enough moronic Filipinos that are more than willing to dignify the flawed points of Carolla. As expected, the Philippine media is happy to add some fuel to the fire and lend a platform to the onion skinned mob to demonstrate their appalling denseness. Ignorance 1, Filipinos 0.
What caught my eye as this writer watched from the sidelines is the reaction of an independent journalist named Fernando Gagelonia. Despite years of working as a journalist, Gagelonia failed to do some research. Instead, he launched into a tirade on Carolla not unlike the Filipino ignoramuses(on the FB account referred earlier) who keep proving what Carolla has ranted about. See for yourself:
Gagelonia should have known better than to stoop to that level. Instead of acting like a siga and a kanto boy, he could have been calmly pointing out the flaws of Carolla’s rants. With veteran journalists like him around, is it any wonder why the Philippines media is so worthless and a good number of Filipinos are (unfortunately) dumb?
No offense to Gagelonia and his colleagues, but even Filipinos who can apply critical thinking regularly can’t just turn their backs to the stupidity of the Philippine mainstream media and its footsoldiers. The socio-economic and clerical elites gain an upper hand when independent thinkers cocoon themselves into a very narrow hole. It might be painful to pay attention to the mass media, but paying attention to it is a necessary evil. Just don’t drink Kool Aid even if the person serving it looks like her or him:
Disclosure: Yeah, the inclusion eye candy for both sexes don’t make much sense, but cut me some slack. This blog needs a break from it usual fare.

The onion skinned nature of some Filipinos reappears once again to demonstrate how ignorant some people can be. When comedian and former cable TV host Adam Carolla poked fun at Manny Pacquiao and his pathetic bandwagon fans, a mob of ignorant Filipinos quickly formed, and is now on a war path with a foreigner who has allegedly done the country injustice.
If one is familiar with Filipinos and how they gravitate to the overdramatic, this should not come as a surprise. In fact, those cynical enough should expect such an incident to occur at least once yearly. Unlike last year when Chip Tsao came under fire for his literate and understated satire piece, the new “controversy” stirred up by another foreigner is less humorous, more direct, and should be equally harmless to Filipinos who can effectively use critical thinking.
To those that have yet to hear or read about the “controversy”, listen to the full audio or read a small portion of it courtesy of AntiPinoy.com:
He says he doesn’t give blood a week before the fight because it weakens him. I am gonna tell you if that was a white fighter or a black fighter from Atlanta, someone will say “What the Eff are you talking about, just give him your blood”. .. He’s a bloody idiot!
Here’s how you know when your country doesn’t have a lot going for it: When everything is about Manny Pacquiao.”
“Imagine this — what if Ray boom boom Mancini went to the Philippines to fight.. and then all that was all the United States was all about… the Unites States will close down when he would fight,… then when he’d come back here — he’d run for President – then everything will be Boom Boom Mancini mania.”
“Get a fu**in life as a country”
“All you fu**in got is just an illiterate guy who happens to smash other guys in the head better than other people”
“It’s fine to be proud of your countrymen — but that’s it? Get your shit together Philippines — That’s all you got? “
“It pisses me off when other countries just do that whole thing. There’s one guy, he’s 5 foot 6, he’s 147 pounds, and he’s good at punching other guys in the head, and you’re gonna build your entire country around this guy?”
“Really, you want some guy with brain damage running your country? Why don’t you get your sh*t together?”
“What happens when Floyd Mayweather beats him? Does your country go into depression?”
“You don’t build your life around LeBron James or Tiger Woods.”
Give yourself a pat on the back if you recognize some truths about the Philippines coming from that statement.
It is hard to understand how and why so many onion skinned people can find the statement “racist”. Don’t they know what comedians do? Have they been living under a rock to not know what rocking the boat means? Can they refute Carolla’s point about Filipinos pinning their ethnic and national pride on a mere person who happens to be an excellent boxer?
What this incident highlights is the flaw of onion skinned Filipinos. Instead of laughing and noting the flaws of Carolla’s points, they actually took offense. They’re actually giving a comedian who has seen better days far more importance. By taking the bait, they actually give him a new chance to have an audience he wouldn’t have had, and he used to have a bigger audience when his shows were on the US cable channels.
It’s actually refreshing to hear someone poke fun at the absurdity of the Pacquiao/Mayweather dispute. Not to mention the absurdity in elevating a flawed individual to be the anchor of one country’s ethnic and national “pride”.
There are several lessons that the seemingly permanently offended and under siege Filipino can learn out this nonsense:
1.) Humor, recognize it.
2.) To anchor one’s ethnic and national pride on a broader set of criteria is preferable. Don’t base it on a flawed person
3.) If people are more critical (preferably the constructive kind), people wouldn’t be butthurt if one of us is called out for bullshit, even if that person is the “pride of the Philippines”.
4.) Strive for marginal improvements which will make the Philippines have more world class athletes and not be joked around as a place known for sex tours.

Some Filipinos are really adept at making an immense embarrassment of themselves. This time, yours truly will focus on pathetic Filipino bandwagon “fans”. Specifically, “fans” of anybody who gets some attention from mainstream America whether it be Manny Pacquiao, Arnel Pineda, and Charice Pempengco.
Recently, this foolish person came out of nowhere to dismiss my views outright and claimed that if she wanted to learn about originality and identity, she would rather go to “genuine” sources whatever they maybe. What stands out about that person is that she wasn’t even a Journey fan in the first place. She only became a Journey fan when she saw Arnel Pineda sing the same old songs popularized already by Steve Perry and Journey decades ago. It made me think that either she was too busy seeking “genuine” sources of commentary or Journey wasn’t her cup of rock afterall. Insert a new frontman of the same ethnicity as hers, and she’s in a “whirlwind romance” with the band and Arnel. Oh boy…..
Here’s another bandwagon jumper who claims to be all about soul/jazz/hiphop jams. Yet she feels compelled to show “some Arnel Pineda love” just because she’s a Filipina. If Pineda was not a Filipino, she wouldn’t show some “love”.
Separating the bandwagon Filipino “fans” of boxing from enthusiasts might be harder since boxing has some major roots in the country. Nonetheless, one only needs to check out the PhilBoxing Forum to see the bandwagon jumping. Manny Pacquiao has 49,000 threads dedicated to him while the general/world boxing topic has only 32,000 threads about it. In addition, one could sense that the average poster there couldn’t give a damn about boxing outside of “Pambansang Kamao” (national fists), Pacquiao’s often cited nickname.
Bandwagon jumping is a universal trait not restricted to any race or ethnicity, but Filipino bandwagon jumpers comically highlight their pathetic poser acts. For instance, poser Filipino”fans” of Journey have been known to wave Philippine flags at Journey concerts. That’s right, flag waving at a concert! The spirit of rock and roll deteriorates more and more as Filipinos can’t manage to hide their poser buffoonery. Read more about flag waving here and here.
Despite all that nonsense, there’s a bright side to this. There are a few Filipinos who call out and criticize the Johnny-come-lately idiots. If you consider yourself an intelligent Filipino, do us all a favor and don’t tolerate the embarrassing actions of your own kin. Tar and feather those guilty of such offense. It warms the heart of this writer that there are Filipinos who can look beyond ethnicity in terms of fandom. Instead they focus on the talent and other qualities of the people that they idolize
FINAL NOTE Once again, this writer asks for the 9000th time, would Filipinos even give a damn about Manny Pacquiao, Charice Pempengco, and Arnel Pineda if they were Thai?

Some Filipinos spit on themselves when they support Charice and Arnel Pineda. Both are only popular because of their mimicry. In other words, they wouldn’t have been popular if they didn’t copy the styles and material of others.
When Filipinos support those two, they proclaim to the world that they acknowledge that Filipinos could only get popular by emulating Westerners, in particular, Americans. In addition, that is also an acknowledgment that songs made by Filipinos and performed by them would not be hits in the world. That acknowledgment proclaims to the world how little they think of their own culture. They have little to no stake in their own culture and arts. They would rather support and emulate Western (IE American) arts.
Take a look closer at Arnel and Charice. Both are stripped of their Filipino (and Asian as a whole) identities when performing. There’s nothing Filipino (and Asian) about them when they sing their songs outside the country. What probably makes it worse is that they try so hard to be an Asian/ Filipino copy of Whitney Houston and Celine Dion in Charice’s case. In Arnel’s case, he becomes an Asian/ Filipino imitator of Steve Perry. What underlies their lack of originality and identities is their lack of original songs. Arnel is singing the same old Journey songs that Steve Perry sang. He’s also not involved in making the 2008 Journey album. Charice has no song of her own despite having two albums published already. Even her “Note To God” is a song already part of Jojo’s album released a few years ago. Note that the song was not good enough for Jojo, but it’s good enough for the management of the Filipina copycat.
Compare and contrast Arnel and Charice to American Idol finalists. When the season of American Idol ends, there’s one thing that the finalists do first and foremost: they either write their own songs or they have professionals do it for them. Since American Idol is a glorified karaoke competition, finalists having their own songs serve a couple of purposes. Having their own songs send a message to the public that the American Idol contestants have their own identity. It also serves to showcase the talent of the contestants. Just take a look at Clay Aiken and Rubben Studdard. They may not have much talent, but having their own respective songs sent a message of identity. The original songs become theirs irrespective of quality.
By having no songs of their own, Arnel and Charice show to the world how worthless they are. One message that is also communicated to the public is how unimportant the two are to their managements and labels. For instance, Charice is just a sideshow at David Foster’s oldies tour (local translation: saling pusa and utus utusan). Arnel is just like pet (aso) that serves Journey (and Neal Schon). Arnel merely serves to belt out whenever Journey is needed, but is irrelevant to the creative process of the band. This entry explains why Journey and Neal Schon would prefer a submissive member to an assertive one.
Just note that the two are so replaceable due to their lack of unique identities and talent. Arnel and Charice could be easily replaced by other good karaoke and lounge singers. Going back to the American Idol comparison, the contestants might not become successful, but they have their songs to call their own. For instance, Clay Aiken has his multiplatinum “Measure of a Man” album. Katharine McPhee on the other hand has the successful singles “Love Story” and “Over It” to call her own. Both tracks received Top40 stations airplay and good enough sales (both physical and internet sales). Notice that I only cited the runner ups. Arnel and Charice are merely sideshows and cannot be compared to American Idol winners if this writer is to make a “balanced” point.
Jose Rizal once wrote that: “Ang hindi marunong magmahal sa sariling wika, daig pa ang hayop at malansang isda“. By giving uncritical support to cover and lounge singers like Charice and Arnel, some Filipinos are guilty of being “hayop at malansang isda”.

Some have said that a picture is worth a thousand words. With that in mind, I give you this:
That’s in Metro Manila by the way. The Filipino people, government, businesses, and etc. have demonstrated a blatant disregard of the environment with no end in sight. With the way garbage is disposed in the country, one wonders how and to what extent unacceptable waste disposal intensifies the death toll of say a Typhoon Ketsana (Ondoy, locally).
In George Romero’s superb Dawn of the Dead, there’s a line that goes: “when there’s no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth”. In the case of the Philippines, when there’s no more room for trash, the trash will kill Filipinos. The unfortunate and preventable disregard for the environment leads to a deadlier storm like Typhoon Ketsana (Ondoy). Here are a couple of videos that shows how deadly a typhoon can be when mixed with the man made stupidity of many Filipinos:

I’ve previously written about how some Filipinos overreacted (more examples, read the responses as well: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) at a piece of satire not even aimed at us. It seems everybody including Manong Tambay and one’s local tongressman congressman foamed at the mouth when they read the part about “nation of servants”. The writer, Chip Tsao, was under such pressure from the Philippine warlords-thieves elected officials that at one point, he was blacklisted from entering the country (since he is not a 50 something white male in search of a 20 something Filipina wife, there’s no reason why he should visit the country). Not to be outdone, the Filipina workers in Hong Kong staged their own rally to protest Chip Tsao and his employer. There were a couple of things that contributed to the success of that Hong Kong protest. The Jollibee fast food restaurants were closed that day, and the Wowowee event scheduled to visit the city was postponed. Everything else being equal, having Jollibees nearby and a Wowowee event will lead to Filipinos entering a state of euphoria. Not that day it seems. The angry Filipinas marched and let their voices be heard. Unbeknownst to them, they also proved two things. First, the educational system of the Philippines is of low quality. The people who got angry couldn’t read between the lines. The foolish Filipinos who brag about their Ateneo, De La Salle, and UP degrees (all useless outside the country) and got angry at Chip demonstrated how dumb they are. Secondly, the “controversy” proved that Filipinos don’t have an indepth grasp of English despite the often cited claim of Filipinos having the best English skillsets in Asia.
The whole event demonstrates that either some Filipinos can’t read between the lines or they love to be part of the herd (pasawsaw). I came across this post made by Joseph Dent in the excellent Indolent Indio that explains the matter to the mangmangs (ignorant) who need to be reeducated in Efren Penaflorida’s mobile classroom.
“My fellow Pinoys, Mr. Chip Tsao is defending Filipinos and Filipino maids and is actually ridiculing these so-called “Chinese patriots”.
When Tessie Tomas pretends to be a rich matrona in “Abangan ang Susunod na Kabanata” and then says outrageous, ridiculous mata pobre things, Tessie Tomas is not really mata pobre, instead, she is exposing the mata pobre of the Filipino upper class. That is how this article works as well: satire. In the article, Mr. Tsao is pretending to be one of these Chinese patriots. He then proceeds to say outrageous, over-the-top, racist statements to show them that the viewpoints of his fellow Chinese citizens are in fact outrageous, over-the-top and racist!
In the first paragraph, he exposes the hypocrisy of the Chinese government when they turn a blind eye on Russia and Japan’s violations (who are big nations), but suddenly become a bully when it comes to the Philippines.
He then exposes what you guys are angry about: that some of his fellow Chinese citizens in fact look down on the Philippines as a “nation of servants”, and that’s why the government is not afraid to bully us. (note Mr. Tsao does not believe we are a nation of servants, he is still playing the part of the proud Chinese patriot)
Now there really is no Louisa. You guys got so angry about how he treated his domestic helper, but she doesn’t really exist. Again, this is still part of the act. When he mentions Louisa has a degree in International Politics and then shows her a map, he is exposing how ridiculous the Chinese are because Mr. Tsao knows that according to the map, the Spratly Islands are in fact close(r) to the the Philippines and according to International Politics, we do in fact have a right to lay a claim on it.
In the next paragraph, Mr. Tsao is actually defending the dignity of Filipino maids. He is condemning his fellow Chinese citizens for their lack of respect and appreciation for their maids who work long hours for them, and showing them what hypocrites they are for hating on the Philippines when in fact they rely so heavily on these upstanding Filipino citizens to keep their households running smoothly.
Then he actually points out that the Chinese are wrong to belittle Philippines given the fact that we have good ties with the USA. Finally, he ridicules the propaganda of his own government back in eh day.
So you see, everything he said here, what he really meant is the opposite. He’s just acting the part of the “racist Chinese patriot”. He is exposing how offensive and ridiculous his fellow citizens and his government are, and the fact that we got so angry proves his point: that how his fellow citizens and his government are behaving is very shameful.
Let’s not throw abuses at Mr. Tsao. He is on our side.”
tl:dr Mag isisp ka! Critical thinking skills won’t kill you.
